Semiquantitative analysis of myocardial injury can be performed using a modified scale as described by Rocha et al (Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 283: H1802-1810, 2002) in which necrosis and inflammatory lesions are scored. In addition picro-sirius red stained slides may be utilized to quantify interstitial collagen along with ED-1 immunohistochemistry for identification of macrophages.
